Flying

I’m flying along the highway

at three thousand revolutions per minute.

four cylinders.

two hundred explosions per second

I’m flying along the highway

at two hundred explosions per second

I like to imagine there is no car

Just me,

feet flying over the ground

like the seabirds that skim the waves

The only way my ancestors could move this fast

was by falling

for three seconds

1...

2...

3...

just long enough

to kill them

I see the trees flying by.

In this world we are all flying

I see the trees flying by.

Every second

the impossibly concentrated ancestors

of these trees

are exploded two hundred times

four hundred times

six hundred times

Beads of rain on the windscreen

I look up to the cloudy sky

So many explosions are changing the clouds

changing the slow patterns of rain and rainclouds.

I look out my drivers window

Wellington harbour

I remember that she and her children

are profoundly connected with ice caps,

with the cyclones and anticyclones,

those parents of rainclouds and the rain

on my windscreen

And as I fly at two hundred explosions per second

I feel suddenly a part of trees and the clouds and the sea

Just like them, I am inextricably tied to all other things.

Just like them, I am bound and free

I feel suddenly

a deep sadness

I am only doing what I can

I hope I can afford a less explosive

electric car soon

soon enough.

One and Two
